Description
An ancient herb regarded as the herb for the elderly, because of its powerful effects on the circulatory system and continual blood flow to the extremities.
Origin: China.
May be useful for but not limited to:
- Inhibits clotting.
- Increase blood flow to the brain.
- Sexual dysfunction & impotence.
- Anxiety.
- Arthritis.
- Hair loss.
Warnings
Known drug interactions: Avoid with warfarin (Coumadin, Marevan). Ginkgo may increase pro-thrombin time & international normalised ration (INR) values. Patients should be monitored for prothrombin & INR values.
Use with caution: antiplatelet medications including Asprin (including Aspro, Solprin, Astrix, Cartia). Co-prescription may increase bruising & bleeding.
Avoid with sodium valproate (Epilim, Valero). Ginkgo has been shown to reduce the effects of sodium valproate in mice. Ginkgo may potentiate the effect of haloperidol (Serenace). Use with caution.
